What is Furmint?
Furmint is an indigenous grape variety of the Pannonian region and one of the most exciting heritage varieties in Central Europe. It stands for freshness, structure, precision, and great aging potential.
Why is Furmint so important to us?
For over 40 years, Furmint has been at the heart of our work. Hardly any other variety reflects soil, site, and climate as precisely – for us, it is a life's work.
What makes Furmint special in Burgenland?
On the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, the Pannonian climate, lean, rocky ground, and abundant light converge. This creates wines with a cool fruit profile, vibrant freshness, and clear minerality.
What does Furmint taste like?
Mostly cool and precise: yellow apple, pear, quince and citrus zest, accompanied by fine spice and a solid minerality. Depending on the site and vinification, delicate and salty or deep and powerful.
Which soils shape our Furmint?
Limestone, quartz, gneiss and mica schist. This variety gives the wines structure, texture and mineral tension.
Does Furmint have aging potential?
Yes. Acidity, structure, and freshness allow Furmint to gain depth and complexity over many years without losing its precision.
How do we vinify our Furmint?
Spontaneously fermented, without cultured yeasts, enzymes, fining or clarifying agents. It matures on the lees in steel or wood, is not filtered, and – if at all – only minimally sulfured.
How long has Furmint been in Rust?
Furmint was once widespread around Rust and disappeared almost completely in the 20th century. In 1984, Michael's grandfather and father brought the variety back to Rust together.
