Since 1647 in Rust on Lake Neusiedl

Our winery is located in Rust in Burgenland, directly on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl. For twelve generations, Michael's family has been dedicated to viticulture here.

Family

Twelve generations have left their mark: experience, responsibility, stories. To this day, a beam press from 1793 stands in the cellar. Their guiding principle stays with us: "If something is good, one should preserve it and take pleasure in the fact that it has been preserved." Fermenting spontaneously in large wooden barrels, without additives and without temperature control – for Michael's grandfather, this was a matter of course. We continue to carry this knowledge forward, combining it with curiosity and the courage to experiment.

Vineyard & Cellar

Work begins in the vineyard. We process exclusively grapes from our own vineyards in Rust. We are a certified organic winery, working as much as possible by hand and intervening only where necessary. In the cellar, our wines ferment spontaneously and mature on the lees in steel tanks or wooden barrels – without cultured yeasts, chaptalization, or fining agents, unfiltered and minimally sulfured. For over 40 years, our focus has been on Furmint.

Today

Today Michael Wenzel runs the winery and is responsible for the vineyards and the cellar. Sonja Priller supports him with marketing and all things creative. Sonja is a photographer and has run her own studio in Vienna for 25 years. In her nature portraits, she engages intensively with the landscape around the lake – the reed beds, wet meadows and the storks on the rooftops of Rust. For us, wine and image tell the story of the same origin.

How long has the winery been in existence?

Our family has been making wine in Rust since 1647. Michael Wenzel is a twelfth-generation winemaker.

Yes. We are a certified organic winery and work as much as possible by hand.
