The town

Rust is situated on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, where the open lake landscape transitions into the Rust Hills. The historic free city is defined by Pannonian light, vast skies, and its proximity to the water. Storks are a familiar sight in the town, nesting on the rooftops of Rust year after year.

The vineyards

Above the town, the vineyards rise – like an amphitheater, open towards the lake. Beneath the vines lie limestone-rich, fossilized marine deposits, accompanied by clay, sand, gravel, and quartz depending on the location. With altitude, orientation, and distance to the lake, the microclimate and soil change – which is why every vineyard site in Rust has its own signature. All of our vineyards are located in Rust.

Where is Rust located?

On the western shore of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, about five kilometers from the Hungarian border.

What role does the lake play for the vineyards?

It stores heat, reflects light into the vineyards, and brings wind. In autumn, damp mornings and fog create a unique microclimate.

Why are starlings an issue during the grape harvest?

From late summer on, large flocks of starlings roost in the reed beds and head into the ripe vineyards during the day. On the western shore, where the reeds are particularly dense, they are as much a part of the harvest as the wind and weather.
